Advances in Dental Implant Technology: The Importance of CBCT

If you're new to dental implants and want the best outcomes for your patients, I highly recommend investing in a cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) system. When I first started placing implants 20 years ago, I relied solely on periapical radiographs (PAs) to guide me through each case. It didn’t take long to realize that a CT scan provides a far superior method for analyzing and preparing cases to achieve the best possible results for my patients.

Accurate Preparation with CBCT

A CT scan offers a quick, three-dimensional view of the patient's mouth, revealing potential complications such as bone loss, low bone density, cysts, and spacing issues, among others. This detailed view is invaluable in planning and executing implant placements with extreme precision.

Many Types of CBCT Software

Finding the right CBCT software is crucial. Ease of use should be a priority. Some software options even allow you to digitally place any brand, length, or size of implant, giving you a clear picture of how the fixture will look once integrated in the mouth. Additionally, all systems include measuring tools to help you accurately gauge the length and width of each implant, ensuring you don't drill too deep, hit a nerve, or perforate the sinus cavity. But why is this important? Understanding each patient's oral anatomy is half the battle in successful case preparation.

Please, please, please do not start placing implants without investing in a CBCT system or, at the very least, partnering with someone who can provide CT scans for your patients. This investment will greatly reduce your chances of failure and help you avoid potential legal issues down the line. Fortunately, many CBCT systems are now more affordable than ever.
